Patient Preparation
How to prepare patients for their ultrasound
Proper preparation ensures the best imaging quality and most accurate diagnostic results. Please follow these guidelines based on the type of examination.
Abdominal Ultrasound
- Fast the patient for 8-12 hours prior to the appointment
- For bladder studies; ensure bladder is full - do not allow patient to urinate immediately before exam
- Clip the ventral abdomen if possible, or we can do this on arrival
- Have recent bloodwork and any relevant imaging available for review
Cardiac / Echocardiography
- The patient should be calm - consider mild sedation for anxious patients
- Clip the right thoracic area from the 3rd to 6th intercostal space
- Have any prior ECGs, radiographs, or cardiac medications list ready
Emergency / STAT
- Contact us immediately to confirm availability
- Stabilize the patient as needed before our arrival
- Prepare a quiet examination area with access to power
- Have IV access established for critical patients
Biopsies & Procedures
- Fast the patient for 8-12 hours
- Review coagulation status - PT/PTT recommended for biopsies
- Discontinue NSAIDS/anti-coagulants 3-5 days prior
- Sedation or anesthesia protocols should be planned in advance
